Why will my blade style not let me modify it?

Created a blade style using Fett263 style library. Everything works great, but I want to change the blast wave effect.

I back up config, cut out the “old” style, and replace it with the new, which was created the same way, and is identical except for the 1 variable… Visual Studio clears it, passes the MK1 eyeball test, nothing is missing. It verifies and uploads. Except it doesnt play the garbled “success” sound upon completion of upload, and the board is locked up.

Cut and paste the “old” style back in and it will work fine.

Do i need to delete the old style, flash it with it deleted, then flash it again to add the new?

Simple config, 1 blade, 4 presets and fonts. All my software is up to date.

Seems like something is lingering somewhere. No .ini files on my SD card

If you flash there is no “old” style on the board. Each upload completely overwrites the previous upload. You most likely have an error in whatever mods you made to the style you uploaded. Post the style code and we can have a look.

See, thats the thing. I didnt mess with anything. Its the exact same bladestyle, created the exact same way, with the only difference being the working one has Blast Effect: Blast Wave (Large), the new and non functional style has Blast Effect: Blast Wave (Random).

Well i think its an Arduino issue. I was uploading with optimization at “fastest”. It verifies and uploads, board at 96% capacity. But saber is locked up. Reflashed it set for “smallest code” or “faster” and it works.

Funny thing is, the old style that does work, with Blast Effect: Blast Wave (Large), will upload when optimized at “fastest”, puts the board at 97%, but works fine.

This is way out of my knowledge set.

@profezzorn any ideas? I only ever use “Smallest Code” myself.

Yeah, I built a massive config with your prop file and full edit mode, 20+ bladestyles, that would only run optimized for smallest code. Started getting some lag, so I went through everything trying to lean it out. I had to get the capacity of the board down to like 65% running smallest code before I could flash at “fastest”, which is next to impossible with edit mode and a ton of defines, let a bunch of blade styles.

But yeah, something in the Arduino Optimizer doesnt like some seemingly insignificant changes it seems. I’ve run into the same issue a few times, or something that presents very similar. for instance, my style that has a Kylo Ren blade effect, I tried the Supreme leader version, then decided I wanted to go back to the TFA movie style… nope, locks up every time. I even ran into the issue when using smallest code.

So I’m stumped.

Test your SD card speed, often style lag is due to slow SD speed.

If you are getting noticeable lag I’d try to find something a little faster then, the styles you posted above are pretty straightforward I wouldn’t expect lag on them. If you build styles with thousands of combos or a bunch of modifiers it can become more noticeable with slower SD cards, but the styles above really shouldn’t have lag in my experience so a better SD might be worth it.

Cool. I figured out through trial and error that the upload would still finish and work sometimes, even with that error present. Good to know.

Now I just can’t figure out why certain seemingly harmless changes to blade styles will brick the board when they don’t contain any errors.

Why would it finish an upload optimized as “fastest”, only use 97% of the available storage, and work fine? But if I re upload the same blade style, changing only the blast effect from Blast Wave (Large), to Blast Wave (Random), on an otherwise identical config file, still optimized as fastest, it uses 96% of storage, finishes the upload with the identical harmless error, but total board failure?

BUT, that same failing config upload, can be re run, optimized as “faster” and now works??? It makes my brain hurt. This is sorcery lol

I’m not sure, but my guess is that the board is running out of RAM.
Large blade styles tends to eat up a fair amount of RAM, and when that happens the board just tends to crash. Unfortunately there is no warning or error message when this happens. RAM is different from flash memory.

IF ram is the problem, Proffieboard V3 is the solution. It has a lot more RAM.

If that was the case, then that blade style would not work at all correct? Because I have the exact same profile in red for a vader font that is working.

It depends a bit on what other options, blades and settings you have on the saber as well.
Of course, it could also be something completely different…

Ok cool. I’ve got a lot to learn still. Think I’m gonna start a fresh config again and build it up 1 edit at a time until I can isolate out the offending code. Thanks for the help.
