Sabertec Seedling with Proffie?

Has anyone tried a Sebertec Seedling charging/data unit with a proffie? I’d like to give it a shot (bought one a while ago and found it again) and wondered if it was worth it.

It was this statement in the manual that gave me pause:

“If you want to use the Seedling in combination with other soundboards, you have to swap D+ and D-. However, we cannot guarantee that other soundboards support it.”

So on a 3.9, D+ would go to D- etc. Thoughts?

On at least some devices, they’ll work fine even with reversed data lines. It shouldn’t be damaging though, and beyond that oddity it’s just a USB port, yeah? (The charging shouldn’t be relevant for whether or not it works, that’s just power and USB-side stuff) So not too much to go wrong. It should work fine afaics.

IJLTH and at some point I really should find out exactly what Sabertrio is using for this type of thing and how it’s wired. I absolutely love having the data/flash port in the same spot as the charge port.

Ha, good point. I remembered it as USBC and thought I could use it as an adapter, but that is not correct. It has a 1.4A charging capability which is faster that onboard, but then a heat warning. I’ll just turn it into another desktop charger or add it to something else. Originally purchased when I wanted something in the same form factor as a NanoBiscotti and I uses a GHv3 for the swap out to get smoothswing.

I guess it could be used for orienting the micro usb perpendicular to the proffie, or some other type of extension.

It should work just fine with Proffieboard, Seedling V2 is now my favorite USB-C Data/Charging port, I use it in all my sabers now. Up to 2 Amps charging speed is such small form factor is top.

The thing to remember for Proffieboards is that VUSB needs to be wired up as well, or data connections (including upload/download) may not work properly.

I see that the V2 has a VBUS pad labeled on the PCB. So looks like I have a V1 and need a V2 which has the 3 wire data access setup.

Just saw this thread. Once the vbus pad is wired up to the seedling v2 plus the data wires, are there any other items that need to be enabled in the config?

No, it’s just wiring.

I have not been able to get the sabertec seedling to work with a proffie v3.9. I’ve wired the VUSB and GND, along with D+ and D- (straight and crossed). I’ve tested the connection with a male USB-C pcb: I get continuity on GND, and as expected the D+ and D- pads… suggesting they would not need to be crossed… but I do not get continuity on the VUSB pad (or B+ pad). Is there some other trick to get the USB port to work for programming… or does it only work for charging? It does seem to connect for charging, but I am not able to see the board on my PC, but I have no issues with a traditional USB-C pcb and a battery charging module.

Ok, so I tested this issue more and here is what I found:

At the current state of things Seedling V2 port can be only used either a battery charger or a Data port, but not both at the same time with Proffieboard… in case of battery charger you can totally connect GND to Proffieboard directly since all GND pads are connected to Batt-, but VBUS wire must be disconnected. Use a wire at least 28AWG to support 2A charging current.

To use Seedling V2 as Data port: don’t connect GND, but connect VBUS, and battery must be connected to Proffieboard, otherwise it won’t get power through USB. For battery charging mode don’t connect VBUS but connect GND. Somehow Proffieboard built-in charger conflicts with Seedling charger…

And to be able to use it for both functions I guess we need somehow to disable Proffieboard onboard charger in the config and enable 5V on Seedling V2 VBUS pad, because currently Seedling doesn’t provide 5V on a VBUS pad by default, it’s only reading 1.5-3.5V for some reason, maybe because it’s how it was designed to work with Golden Harvest v4 board by Sabertec.

Is the 1.5v-3.5v on VBUS when connected to the proffie? (Or does it do even when not connected to the Proffie?)

3.5V when not connected and 1.5V when connected.

@profezzorn is there a way to disable onboard charging with a define line in config?

Oh, then the only way to disable Proffieboard 450mA onboard charging is not connecting the VBUS to Seedling V2 USB port, and without VBUS wire Data transfer doesn’t work…

I was reading this thread and I remembered something I saw on The Saber Armory. USB Type C Port and Lithium Ion Battery Charging Kit – The Saber Armory

I’m not sure this could be the solution, but the lower part seems like a similar configuration like the Seedling V2 (but combined). Or will this also not work with a v3?

Perhaps by using the killswitch like in the lower image, the board won’t charge the battery, but the seedling does. And because the seedling is fully connected to the proffie board, the board does get power for data?

Any thoughts? I could be wrong :man_shrugging:

No, this is my diagram from the Proffieboard PDF User Manual and it works with a separate charging board because it’s not “smart” like Seedling V2. Here VBUS 5V is always enabled directly from the USB cable and powering Proffieboard MCU and its onboard 450mA charger, so to make the separate 1A charger work you have to disable the Kill Switch here or also not connect the VBUS wire. Seedling V2 is a little bit different situation.

Why not? USB should work without VBUS, as far as I know.

EDIT: Ah, I see, it won’t if it’s spec-compliant, but does the proffieboard observe this…?
