I was wondering if with more powerful chips we can have pixel effects from SD in the future

Basically is there any possibility of pulling pixal effects from the sd card to have repeatable effects? or to have ez pov effects.

What is a ā€œrepeatable effectā€ ?
The biggest problem with POV effects isnā€™t the sd card speed, itā€™s the speed of neopixel communication. Proper POV effects requires dotstar pixels.

I am arguing about POI and the flow arts stuff on another forum. that proffie wouldnt be great for spinning effort ā€¦ like it lacks the space for poiā€¦ and you would need to grab and display images off of sd. One example is the graphx or what ever its called from plector. its basically a pov but its done to have a pixal by pixel repeatable effectā€¦ or in this case a poi imageā€¦ basically a POI or flow toy would be limited because of the types of effects the diffent desired output from saber. while there are some effects it would not offer all the effect you would wantā€¦ like many pov images because of memoery space on the chipset. also it lack sound reationā€¦ not font reaction but outside sound reaction. wled is a good example of that with desireable effects. but you would want effects that add spinning and pouring like sand. spinning where you flatten bar to it looks like a ball spinning aroundā€¦ basically slow motion effects that lend to flow to fast motion. Sorry if I am hard to understandā€¦ covid brain fog.

Also I think poi are too pricey because there is no solid opensouce like proffie but build for spin/flow arts. and someone pointed to proffie. I was like not enough effects translate over to spin.

Anyways I am running on E.

what do you think???

The covid fog is in full force. I sort of get what youā€™re talking about, but Iā€™m not sure I understand if youā€™re looking for something specific, or if you just think anything remotely like this would be cool.

First up, we already do have a way to grab images from the SD card. There is a FromFileStyle and FromHumFileStyle. These are synchronized to music or sound, but if you turn up the frame rate they could probably produce flow-like effects.

I could imagine building something better, but without dotstars, the frame rate is never going to exceed ~300 fps, which I donā€™t think is enough for a high-quality POI/POV effect. With dotstars, we might be able to get 1000fps.

If I wanted to build a POI, I would use a teensy4 and dotstars to do it. With a setup like that you could reach frame rates up to 8 thousand frames per second.

Given that the effect might not be great, is it really worth it?

I mean you would just need a teensy 4.0 saber like less mosfits, lose the sound stuff add a mic and do your own smd pcb with dotstars unless the pcb makers can do it. Now what about wireless sync. because there is 2 you need to sync them. normally you set one to ā€œpresetā€/mode and sync themā€¦ the PCB part is eazyā€¦

I lack the coding experteseā€¦ I am good at copying and reformulating like the prop files but code something like the proffie for poi would be a big undertaking. its out of my skillset.

anyways on a more basic level of spin arts how much of the effects translate over?

also there is a bit of adhd brain in there too. cant blame it all on covid.

What is the mic for?
What does the wireless sync do?

external sound reactive effectsā€¦ like I dont know if you seen wled sound reactive effects.

sync the preset/mode once you find it on one you just sync other one rather than searching for itā€¦ there is no sound. or leave the sound add in a cell phone speaker rather than the mini mosters we use. Anyway they are normally a pair. Get one picked out then sync the secondā€¦ also they will use phone apps. if you want to be fansy.

I have not.

Does this assume there are two light sticks then?

think 2 mini sabers on a string at one end that you spin. for oneā€¦ there is also staffs, and dragon staffs think staffs with a big ninja star on each end, and fans like a fan dance. and hula hoops, and buungeng, juggle clubs, and balls, leviwandsā€¦ But poi is normally one for each hand.

I am sure you heard of fire poiā€¦ its the same idea with leds balls or sticks.

oh wled is great let me see if I can find a good video with out the how toā€¦

wled sound react demo

I used this and the normal version of wled on my bike for burning man this year. I put it together in an hour with soldering and programingā€¦ it was a last minute additionā€¦ you can do a lot more. this just the most popular effects

here is anther

oh ya its open source like proffie and uses esp32 and esp8266

This reminds me of the the ā€˜turn the speaker into a micā€™ idea that was floating around. I think you can get some pretty cool spinning effects that are independent of external sound already, even if itā€™s not true POV, with things like the yin yang blade. Maybe dividing the angular based effect into more segments would be interesting.

So itā€™s really two features weā€™re after here: sound based effects (which already exist) that react to external sounds, and POV speed. Since it seems that dot stars are the only way to get true POV, maybe that speaker into mic is worth pursuing?

What Iā€™d like out of a glow poi would be something that was lighter than some of the ones Iā€™ve tried, so itā€™s the battery thatā€™s kept me away from that form factor. If Iā€™m gonna break my nose, might as well go all the way and set my face on fire too

fun fact you should water yourself before fire poiā€¦ It helps if screw up. also

Power through the wire?

Seems like an easy fix, except the grips are usually loops like:

Or

So youā€™d wind up with a handle, a flexible length of conductior, and a ball which is more like a morning star or mace.

I have been contemplating building a pair of POV nunchucks once I have some Proffie M2s. AA-size li-ion battery in one nunchuck, proffieboard and possibly a small speaker in the other, dotstars pixels in both. Fill with clear resin if needed.

Iā€™ve been thinking about some ā€˜chucks. I get into Bruce Lee phases. M2 dot star plan sounds amazing.

I thought I might repeat my hollow core skinny strip quad blade design so each end would have a speaker. It would work from a practical stand point and not break form.
Itā€™s the 2 of everything part that was making me hesitate. Or even 4 if you need to go full Enter the Dragon and dual ā€˜chuck.

Sounds funā€¦ they make all sort of flow toysā€¦ Except saberā€¦ I wonder whyā€¦ lolā€¦ they cant charge 1200 for a stunt saberā€¦ like they charge for restā€¦

I played with a collapsible staff and liked using the the ends as batons/escrima sticks think like a short saber bladeā€¦ dual wielding is definitely my stillā€¦ I will be getting the cheapest version of that staffā€¦ its just basic leds but it feel right.

sure I could do the same with a basic microcontroller and fast led. but its made and I can replace the electronics as some point.
