FETs not turning on

Hello, I’m working on a Saberbay Darksaber build (following these instructions), and I was testing the Proffie v3.9 board prior to install. I uploaded the included config to the board and took some measurements with a multimeter to check that everything was working as expected:

  • Battery voltage nominal (~4V, matches serial monitor)
  • GND to 5V and 3.3V pads both measured nominal (~5V, ~3.3V, respectively)
  • Batt+ to LED2, LED3, and LED4 returned near-zero voltages

The last test is where the problem lies. From the config, I would expect these FETs to turn on, but I’m not getting the nominal ~4V. I’ve included my intended wiring diagram here as well. Notably, a single data line is used for the accent pixel and the hilt-side PCB (no LEDs, only passthrough). I used the Din and Dout pads on the accent pixel to daisy-chain the data line to the hilt-side PCB that delivers data directly to the main blade (the blade PCB has a 330 Ohm resistor on the data line). I used SubBlade in the config to mirror the wiring. The switch PCB is wired up as a npxl pcb, with it’s own pos, neg, and data lines. Does anyone see anything amiss here?

Additional note: I plan on wiring a small “2020” pixel strip as shown in the instructions, except wiring it to Batt+, LED5, and Data3 (switch PCB LEDs get power from LED4). From what I understand, it’ll be a normal WS281XBladePtr. I’ll have to add another line to the BladeConfig section, a style to each preset, and increase blade to 4 to run it. That’s separate from the issue I’m having here, but may present similar symptoms if I don’t resolve this issue.

When you’re measuring the FETs, where do you put the other probe?

Thanks. I checked that page to remind myself what pad the other probe should be on. I’m measuring between Batt+ and LED2/LED3/LED4. I’ve installed several other sabers recently, and I’ve taken the same measurement as an indicator that the FETs I’ve configured are working.

It seems likely that this board is bad somehow.
Do you have warranty?

Not sure about a warranty. I purchased the board as part of an install kit from Goth3D-Designs. One more wrinkle to this puzzle though. I got another board in today for a different build, and I was able to replicate the issue on that board as well. It seems unlikely that two boards from different sources would fail in the same way, so my eye is drawn to the config file as a likely suspect. Side note, but the micro-usb port on the original board is pretty finicky getting a reliable connection via cable. I suspect a loose solder joint.

Edit: Further evidence to support this is in the fact that I get expected voltages from the FETs on both boards when uploading a different config. One specific observation from the serial monitor: a board with config in question does not print the “playing <font_dir>/<sound_file.wav>” message. The only messages I see are mostly clash events, with a few swing events, while I move the board around as if swinging in a saber.

Interesting, I guess we dig into the software side of things then:

  1. what kid of computer do you have? (windows, mac, linux? arm, x86?)
  2. What version of Arduino do you have?
  3. What version of the Arduino-Proffieboard plugin?
  4. What version of ProffieOS?
  5. Do you have “Smallest Code” in Arduino → Tools, or something else?

Wait, I just noticed something, your subblade is not set up properly:

The SubBlade says you have 109 LEDs, but the WS281XBladePtr<> says you have 108, which is it?

Good catch. It looks like I miscounted the pixels anyway. There are 112 in the main blade, and an additional one for the accent pixel. I corrected the first line to:

Once I uploaded again, the FETs worked as expected (i.e. provided nominal ~4V from Batt+ to match battery voltage). No error message from the compiler about the incorrect blade config, it just didn’t enable the FETs.

To answer the software questions, I’m running on Windows 10, Arduino IDE v2.3.8, Proffie plugin v4.6, ProffieOS v7.14, and “Smallest Code” is enabled in the Arduino IDE.
