Computers

hey guys… started with a Chromebook and learned I cant do it with it so off to buy a new laptop… what’s my best bang for the buck… its really just for doing this… what’s my best system…WINDOWS or a Mac? PLEASE AND THANK YOU GUYS!!! I just want to get back to work on this and make it work

it depends on preference, i use windows that what we learned to use in high school, but i would go for 11tho because 10 will no longer be supported as of October of this year

The absolutely best bang for buck is to run linux on an old laptop or desktop. You don’t even have to actually install it. You can just download ubuntu to a thumb drive and boot it from there.
Most chromebooks are also capable of running linux, which would make it capable of doing all of this.

The cost in this case is time. Linux tends to be less user friendly than mac or windows, so it might take some googling to figure things out. If you don’t enjoy that sort of thing, maybe just buy something that runs whatever OS you are most comfortable with.

thank you man i appreciate it… so all im looking at now says windows 11 but take out of “S” mode? any idea of what that is and easy to get rid of? Thank you for any info… im just learning computers now (been a bricklayer for 30 years… nowhere near computers and kids all have Chromebooks (why i got 1 but doesn’t work for this)so lookin for best cheapest i can to get goin

S mode is a “restricted” version of windows that only lets you install programs from windows store. you can turn it on and off in the registry, there’s videos on youtube on how to do that

The problem with laptops is most of them can’t be upgraded. So if you see a powerful windows machine, like an Acer, it’s gonna be a brick soon enough if the price point is low.

I use Macs because they last about 7 years at a stretch, are very user friendly, and I’m an elitist who buys into the advertising :).

… it’s a good GUI on top of UNIX.
Use TotalFinder for even better interface options (like we used to have before Apple went Gen Z with the minimalism).
