Check My Thinking for This Hot Board...?

Got an 89 Sabers installed on the bench with a proffe 2.2 that’s getting warm at the main processor. By all accounts it was fine for a long time until it wasn’t.

Obviously heat normally means shorts, but I’ve checked everything with a meter and I can’t find any. The 5 volt pad seems good at 5 volts, and the 3.3 volt pad seems OK too (3.27). However the switch pads are low - Power is 2.48 volts and Aux is 2.71 volts, even with both switch wires unsoldered from the board, and the board still gets hot regardless.

Which suggests to me that the board has developed a fault and is kaput, and I just need to swap it out. Just thought Id ask here first in case I’ve missed anything.

You may want to try cleaning the board.
Sometimes faults like these are caused by metal bits and dust on the board.
It’s a long-shot though, and if it doesn’t work, replacing the board is probably the right move.

Thanks Prof. Yeh I thought the same, and have been over it with alcohol and cotton buds, but no joy. It seems to have some kind of coating on it which I’ve mostly managed to remove. No idea what it was or if it was a contributory factor, but removing it doesn’t seem to changed anything so maybe the damage was done.

Anyway glad to hear I’m on the right lines. I’ll get it swapped out and hopefully all will be well.

Thanks again.

*** Update ***

Board replaced - all fixed.
So looks like it was the board. No idea how it can work fine for a couple of years and suddenly just develop a fault out of the blue, but there we go - now sorted.
